We all know what’s going on in the world right now. Just a few weeks ago was another senseless killing of an innocent Black Man in the hands of a white officer in Minneapolis. Now America, but also the world has reached a tipping point where enough is enough and change needs to happen sooner rather than later. Some people may wonder what they can do, because not only are we currently dealing with what some call the never-ending sickness of racism, but we are also dealing with a pandemic known as the Coronavirus. But, unlike the former, the latter may end at some point. So, with that being said some people may still be wondering how they can help during a time when we need to be together, but also keep our distance and remain apart.

Here are some suggestions:

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

That first step to making a change and taking the turn for the better is to SPEAK UP. It’s important to talk about the elephant in the room. Bring your family, friends, and anyone else together who are non-black and have that uncomfortable discussion around race. We have to hold ourselves and the people around us accountable. Gone is the time where we can just swipe everything under the rug and let it pile up. Whether you speak with one person, or 500 people, it all makes a huge difference. If you feel uncomfortable discussing it, ask someone who is educated on the matter to come in, and discuss any questions or concerns that there might be.

Read Books Or Watch Movies On Black History

To become more educated on black history, there are a couple of steps you can take. For starters, you can read books or watch movies on the history of black people.

Here are some book recommendations:

  • Between The World And Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
  • The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
  • The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
  • The Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward
  • White Fragility by Robin Diangelo
  • Me And White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad

Show Support For The People In Your Local Community

  • Be comfortable with yourself, but also branch out
  • Support black businesses
  • Hire more diverse employees
  • Attend more black hosted events

At the end of the day, we are all people in this world. ALL OF US, no matter where we are from, our race, ethnicity, economic standing, whatever the case may be, are all humans and deserve to be treated as such. So, how about WE all come together during these trying times and make a change for the better. It’s going to take time, but it is time for us to all come together, sit down and have a much needed discussion.
